Mary Sky Schoolcraft's plein aire oil paintings reflect the vibrant saturated colors of Hawaii. She paints the timeless scenes of Kohala, from the mountains to the sea, from the plantation era cottages to the lush tropical vegetation.

Mary Sky began her artistic journey making art from found objects, recycled materials, and mudpies. In college she progressed to photography, landscape design, drawing and fiber arts. After obtaining her BA in Political Science, and a Masters in Urban Planning, she left CIty Hall and obtained a degree in graphic design, then created a company making banners, flags and "soft stained glass" of translucent nylon fabrics in Eugene, Oregon. She moved to Santa Fe, NM in 1991 and began her study of painting there.

She's grateful to Leigh Gusterson, Tom Lockhart, and Frank Lalumia for introducing her to plein aire painting in NM. She does not, however, blame them for her flowing landscapes, expressionistic use of color, or tendency towards "magical realism."

Mary Sky was a founding member of the North Kohala Artists Cooperative at Kenji's House Gallery from 2007 - 2009. She is the catalyst and founder of the Living Arts Gallery, which was born in the midst of the economic recession (June 11, 2009), with the motto, "Take Heart, Make ART!"
