KAREN SPACHNER
Karen Spachner's watercolors express a joyful celebration of tropical Hawaii, with vibrantly colored island scenes animated with geckos, mermaids, and even dancing cows. Her intricately detailed flowers and fauna come from more than 30 years of painting and practice, as well as being immersed in island life for the past 20 years. She skillfully expresses playful and childlike wonder at the world in Rousseau-like color and pattern images.
Karen Spachner majored in art at Dean College in Franklin, MA and studied at the New York School of VIsual Arts. She was the artist for several Hawaii firms' image campaigns, and is well known for her illustrated children's books, "Keikilani, the Kona Nightingale," and "The Volcano Adventures of Keikilani." She was an active exhibiting member of the Kailua VIllage Artists Cooperative in Kailua-Kona for almost twenty years before recently relocating to North Kohala in 2010. Her works can be seen in many homes, galleries and public buildings in Kona and around the world. She joined the Living Arts Gallery as a full member in 2011.
