Ilmar’s introduction to painting watercolors was in art classes in architecture school. He reintroduced himself to this medium after retiring from architectural practice and moving to Waimea in 2008. He now paints on a regular basis with North Kohala Plein Air Painters.
To express the relationship between hard man made objects and the softness of nature is what Ilmar finds to be an interesting challenge in watercolor painting. Sometimes this relationship is harmonious and sometimes it can be clashing. To express either relationship in such a way that it evokes an emotional response in the viewer is what painting is about.
